What is ranch sorting?
- Ranch Sorting is rapidly becoming the #1
Equine Family Sport. Ranch Sorting is a
family-oriented, ranch-style, fun equine sport that any
level of rider can compete in. Ranch sorting is an
exciting timed event. A team of two riders enters the
arena to sort 12 head of calves. Ten of the cattle are
numbered 0 through 9, and two of the cattle are
unmarked. The two riders are randomly called number and
have exactly 60 seconds to numerically sort the cattle
into a nearby round pen, starting with the number
called. For example, if the riders hear three, they
first will push the cow with the number three on its
back to the round pen followed by the No. 4 cow, then
the No. 5 cow, and so on until all are penned without
disturbing the unmarked cattle.

What is team penning?
- Team penning is a western equine sport that is
fast-paced and exciting. A team of three riders on
horseback have 60 seconds (depending on the class or the
sanctioning of the event) to separate three
same-numbered cattle from a herd of 30, and put them
into a small pen through a 10' opening, at the opposite
end of the arena. A run starts once the line judge has
dropped his flag as the riders cross the foul line. At
that time, the announcer gives out a randomly drawn
number, such as "Your number is seven". The riders then
know that they must cut out the three head of cattle
that are wearing the number "7" and push them to the
opposite end of the arena, and put them into the pen,
and call for time. Teamwork is the key.
